Menendez Faces 222-Year Prison Sentence for Corruption
Democratic Senator Targeted for Removal
Charges Include Bribery, Conspiracy, and False Testimony
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Democrats are demanding the resignation of Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) after he was found guilty on 16 counts of corruption. The charges against Menendez, 70, include bribery, conspiracy, and false testimony.
The guilty verdict comes after a three-week trial in which prosecutors presented evidence that Menendez accepted bribes from a Florida eye doctor in exchange for political favors. Menendez has denied the charges and vowed to appeal the verdict.
However, Democratic leaders are calling for Menendez to step down immediately. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement that "the evidence presented at trial was overwhelming, and Senator Menendez's actions have betrayed the public trust." Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) also called for Menendez's resignation, saying that he "has no place in the United States Senate."
If Menendez does not resign, he could be expelled from the Senate by a two-thirds vote. However, such a vote is unlikely as it would require the support of some Republicans.
Menendez faces up to 222 years in prison for the various counts against him. However, it is likely that he will receive a much shorter sentence.
