What is the Albanian Language?
An Overview of the Albanian Language
The Albanian language is an Indo-European language spoken in Albania and by smaller numbers of ethnic Albanians in other parts of the southern Balkans. It is the principal and official language of Albania and Kosovo and a co-official language in North Macedonia and Montenegro.
History and Development
Albanian is a member of the Indo-European language family, which includes most of the languages of Europe. It is believed to have diverged from the other Indo-European languages in the Balkan Peninsula around the 6th century BC. Albanian is closely related to the Greek and Armenian languages, and it shares some similarities with the Romance languages, such as Italian and Spanish.
Distribution and Dialects
Albanian is spoken by approximately five million people in the Balkan Peninsula. It is the majority language in Albania and Kosovo and is spoken by significant minorities in North Macedonia, Montenegro, Italy, and Greece. There are two main dialects of Albanian, Gheg and Tosk, which are distinguished by their pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.
